Introduction
 

With the various applications of the research reactor, new control technologies and relevant facilities become more important especially for the advanced fuels and materials development related to a next generation reactor and the extension of the life time of the current nuclear power reactors. Three types of control system are regularly considered in the HANARO capsule irradiation tests:

 

- System for control and monitoring of the irradiation temperature and He gas pressure
  during irradiation tests using a material instrumented capsule
- Control system for the control of the test fuel temperature, monitoring of the temperature
  and elongation of the test fuel, internal pressure of the test fuel rod, and monitoring of the
  failure of the test fuel rod
- Control system for the control and monitoring of the stress, temperature, and displacement
  during irradiation creep tests

- Control and monitoring of the irradiation temperature and He gas pressure during irradiation
- Construction : vacuum control (10¡­760 torr He), heater control (0¡­3.5 kW), data
  aquisition and analysis system
- In-situ remote control of the irradiation condition and the measurement of the data during
   irradiation test 

 


  
[Fuel capsule control system] 
 

- Temperature control of the test fuel rods, monitoring of the temperature, pressure, and
   elongation of the test fuel rod, and the failure monitoring of the test fuel rods during the
   fuel irradiation test
- Operation of a manual and automatic mode including a vacuum control, mixed
   gas(He/Ne) supply, a radioactivity monitor and a control
- In-situ monitoring and control of the irradiation characteristics and a database


  [Creep capsule control system]  

 

- Construction : vacuum control, heater control, stress control, and displacement monitoring
- Operation : auto/manual
- In-situ measurement and analysis of the stress-displacement data during an irradiation
   test

- Use for the materials and fuel irradiation tests using an instrumented capsule
- Production of the irradiation data for nuclear material and fuels
- Key technological advances in the design, realization, and operation of the control
   systems.


Status and plan
 
 

- Three types of control systems are installed in HANARO and are available for material
   and fuel irradiation tests using an instrumented capsule
- Advanced fuel capsule control systems have been under development to support the users
   programs since 2001
