HANARO-Neutron Irradiation Facility

¡¡

Since 1995, large amount of radioisotopes have been produced using HANARO reactor at KAERI. HANARO(High-flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor) was designed to meet the growing need for a high intensity neutron source, providing a peek thermal flux of 5 x 1014n/cm2.s. HANARO is used not only for research and development but also for radioisotope production.

HANARO is currently operated at 22 MWt and twenty two irradiation holes, which consist of  of 4 ORs, 17 IPs and one hydraulic transfer system(HTS) in the reactor core and reflector, are used to produce radioisotopes

Radioisotope Production Facility

Radioisotope production facilities of KAERI were completed in 1997. HANARO and radioisotope production facilities have been utilized to meet the local demand of radioisotopes in medicine, industry and research since 1996. All the facilities are presently accommodated in a 3-story building adjacent to HANARO building.

There are 21 hot cells equipped with manipulators. Four concrete hot cells are used to produce radiation sources for industrial use and seventeen lead hot cells, which are equipped with clean room facilities, are used for production of medical purpose radioisotopes.

Facility for Radiopharmaceutical Production

Facilities for the production of Radio-pharmaceuticals were installed at 2nd floor of RIPF in accordance with KGMP standards.  In designing, a dual concept has been introduced; Radiation protection, Maintenance of biological cleanliness.

In clean room, various and effective equipments are provided for the production of radiopharmaceuticals such as cold vials used in diagnosis and treatment for diseases such as cancers.

QC Lab is located on the second and third floors of RIPF facility. Its role is  mainly related to the quality control of radiopharmaceuticals as medicine and to ascertain its efficacies as therapeutic agents.

Animal lab is also belong to hot zone. The radiopharmaceuticals are tested to rabbits, rats or mice right before its release to users at the last moment for finalizing its effects and drug specificity as nuclear medicine using g-Camera.
